Curly maple (Acer spp) grain forms when cells grow in a repeated spiral pattern rather than straight up and down. When the wood is split, it will look and feel like a washboard. If the wood is sanded to a flat surface, a cross-barred effect is produced by the changing angel of light reflection. Curly grain is not cultivated commercially, making it prized and sought after by many crafters.
